Newspapers as nonprofits
The idea of converting newspapers to nonprofits has heated up around the country. I say it can work. The publishers can dump the massive real estate that includes office space for the reporters, presses, etc. Get small offices with large computers and let the staff e-mail in the breaking news. Then combine printed and Internet versions, as we have now. The wire services are all Internet, after all. It's not the writers, advertisers, or readers that are hurting the bottom lines: it's the real estate.
